MOSA would like to express its dismay and anger regarding the decisions made by the Executive Board of UM today.
What's Happening?
On the 20th of may student protesters demonstrated at the Law faculty to demand that UM cut ties with Israeli institutions complicit in genocide, ethnic cleansing and colonization. This is within their rights.
As a response the Executive Board sent out an email explaining that due to the situation, they plan to enforce security and condition entrance to UM card holder wherever they deem it necessary.
Our Response
MOSA would like to highlight not only how ridiculous this response is but the extent to which it is revealing of many underlying issues in how our university is run. The lack of clarity in regard to how these decisions are made and are going to be made is striking...
MOSA stands against the policing of students by their own universities and furthermore does not see the cause for any increased security as there does not appear to be a safety threat. There certainly wasn’t any behavior on the part of the protesters today which could be reasonably understood as making people unsafe.
Student Rights
MOSA would also like to point out that forcing the use of UM cards to access university buildings is a means of repression of the student demonstration that the university claimed that they wanted to give space to in the same email. UM hereby continues its attack on demonstration rights on campus, endangering students it claims to want to protect.
More police and more security leads not only to a repression of rights in a democratic society, but also endangers students within their university, as seen in Leiden and Nijmegen.
Anti-Democratic
With the current information MOSA sees not a single justification for any of what the Executive Board has put on the table, and demands that the EB not go through with these excessively anti-democratic measures.
